Community Service Officer (CSO). CSOs are traditionally recent high school graduates who are looking towards law enforcement as a viable career path, and waiting to meet the age and education requirements to apply to the Police Academy.

The CSO program allows the employee up to five years to gain valuable, practical experience, while attending college under the tuition reimbursement program and earning a salary.

CSOs gain experience by performing the following services:

• Responding to and investigating complaints of non-violent and non-emergency calls for service.
• Preparing traffic crash/incident reports and issuing citations for non-criminal traffic incidents.
• Interviewing citizens and preparing police reports when necessary.
• Providing administrative support such as fingerprinting citizens and producing copies of offense or crash reports.
• Responding to citizen requests for information (such as crime data for specific neighborhoods).
